Database Supervisor in Economic Botany

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is seeking an excellent candidate to fill the position of Database Supervisor in the Institute of Economic Botany (IEB). This position is part of NYBG's planned initiative to move information about all collections at the Garden (herbarium, economic botany, laboratory, etc.) into a central database system being developed at NYBG (CASSIA). The Database Supervisor position is for two years, and, in this initial two years of CASSIA development and implementation, the Database Supervisor will work closely with researchers and staff in the Institute of Economic Botany, the Computer Services Department, and the NYBG Herbarium. Duties will include maintaining economic botany authority files, overseeing new data entry from economic botany data files containing collection and sample information about economically useful plants, and working with the CASSIA development group. The Database Supervisor will spend 1/4 of his/her time on economic botany research under the direction of Dr. Michael Balick. The overall goal is to keep the Database Supervisor up-to-date on all research, data-gathering, and data presentation methods in the changing field of economic botany by hands-on participation in ongoing research endeavors in the IEB to which plant specimens are attached.

The successful candidate will have an M.S. or B.S. in Economic Botany, Anthropology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, or other field involving economic botany, and computer skills, especially database experience in economic botany. Flora of Pennsylvania Internship

Announcing: A one-year internship will begin June 1998, with six hours of graduate credit at the University of Pennsylvania. Time is to be split between the Botany Departments of the Morris Arboretum and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The intern will work under the joint supervision of Dr. A.E. Schuyler (Academy of Natural Sciences) and Dr. Ann F. Rhoads (Morris Arboretum).

The internship will provide work experience in all aspects of managing collections in a major herbarium and an opportunity to contribute to the preparation of a modern state flora through a research project in some aspect of the flora of Pennsylvania.

Requirements: Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in biology, with course work in botany.
