Charles Arzeni

McALLEN, Texas--Charles Arzeni, Ph.D., 71, of McAllen, Texas, formerly of Charleston, died Oct. 9,1997, in Ajijic, Mexico. No funeral was held.

Mr. Arzeni was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Witt. He married Joan S. Cage. She survives and resides at 200 W. Esperango S., McAllen, Texas 78501-2080.

Also surviving are two children, Marie Mosior of Ballwin, Mo., and Paul Arzeni of Green Bay, Wis., and four grandchildren.

He was a research botanist for the Firestone Rubber Co. in Liberia, served as chairman and professor of biology at Tougaloo College, Jackson, Miss., and taught at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, before turning to Eastern Illinois University to teach in the botany department in 1965. After 28 years of service, he retired as professor of botany at EIU.

Mr. Arzeni, who was renowned bryologist and economic botanist, was recognized as an international researcher and lecturer. He was awarded two Fulbright Scholarships (Colombia and Peru) and served as resident director of tropical botany for more than 10 summers at the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores in Monterrey, Mexico.
